Ahead of the curve: the use of technology foresight in regional industrial strategy

February 15 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

An MD Club Event

Foresight exercises are a useful tool in policy making, and are used by a number of countries, including Japan, Germany and the UK to inform economic strategies and policies. The Regional Technology Foresight team at the University of Sheffield is organising a workshop to increase awareness of technology foresight, and to explore how it can be used to revive regional manufacturing.

Ahead of the Curve: The Use of Technology Foresight in Regional Industrial Strategy workshop will take place on March 21st, 2-5pm. It will be hosted at Albert Works, the premises of digital marketing and AI agency Jaywing.

We are very excited to announce that the keynote will be given by Chi Onwurah MP, Shadow Secretary for Industrial Strategy, Science & Innovation. Ms Onwurah will talk about the importance of technology and innovation strategy for the revival of UK industry.

Dr Patrick Noack, Senior Policy Adviser on Emerging Technologies and Futures at the Royal Society, will present on the role of foresight in policy planning. Laurie Smith, Senior Researcher at NESTA, who focuses on the technological, social and economic aspects of emerging technologies, will talk about how to build collective visions for the future of local areas. Dr Jonathan Bray, Deputy Head of Digital at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, will talk about technology and innovation policies in practice.

The presentations will be followed by facilitated discussions, and then time for networking.

There are a few places available on the Ahead of the Curve workshop for people working in relevant fields and/or policy-making. If you are interested in attending the workshop, please complete our short online registration form.
